Reminders from the Qur‘aan and Authentic Sunnah Concerning Spending for the Sake of Allaah

Allaah said whilst describing His devout servants,

They used to sleep but little by night invoking their Lord (Allaah) and praying, with fear and hope. And in the hours before dawn, they were found asking Allaah for forgiveness, and in their properties there was the right of the beggar, and the mahroom (the poor who does not ask the others).” [Sooratudh-Dhaariyaat 51:17-19]

And Allaah said,

Say: Truly, my Lord enlarges the provision for whom He wills of His servants, and also restricts it for him, and whatsoever you spend of anything in Allaah’s Cause, He will replace it. And He is the Best of providers.” [Soorah Saba‘ 34:39]

Allaah said,

Who is he that will lend to Allaah a goodly loan so that He may multiply it to him many times? And it is Allaah that decreases or increases your provisions, and unto Him you shall return.” [Sooratul-Baqarah 2:245]

Allaah said,

Indeed, Allaah has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties; for the price that theirs shall be the Paradise.” [Sooratut-Tawbah 9:111]

Allaah said,

By no means shall you attain al-Birr (piety, righteousness), unless you spend in Allaah’s Cause of that which you love; and whatever of good you spend, Allaah knows it well.” [Soorah Aal-’Imraan 3:92]

Allaah said,

Those who spend their wealth in the Cause of Allaah, and do not follow up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, their reward is with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” [Sooratul-Baqarah 2:262]

Spending in the cause of Allaah is a purification for the donor, Allaah said,

Take sadaqah (alms) from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it, and invoke Allaah for them. Indeed, our invocations are a source of security for them, and Allaah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.” [Sooratut-Tawbah 9:103]

Allaah said,

Shaytaan threatens you with poverty and orders you to commit al-Fahshaa‘ (evil deeds, illegal sexual intercourse, sins); whereas Allaah promises you Forgiveness from Himself and Bounty, and Allaah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower.” [Sooratul-Baqarah 2:268]

Allaah said,

Those who are miserly and enjoin miserliness on other men and hide what Allaah has bestowed upon them of His Bounties. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a disgraceful torment.” [Sooratun-Nisaa‘ 4:37]

Allaah said,

Those who spend in Allaah’s Cause (i.e. with deeds of charity, alms, etc.) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allaah loves al-Muhsinoon (the gooddoers).” [Soorah Aali-’Imraan 3:134]

Allaah said,

Say (O Muhammad) to My servants who have believed, that they should establish the Prayer, and spend in charity out of the sustenance We have given them, secretly and openly, before the coming of a Day on which there will be neither mutual bargaining nor befriending.” [Soorah Ibraaheem 14:31]

From Abee Hurayrah (radiyallaahu ’anhu) that the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘There is no day that the servants awaken, except that two angels descend and say, “O Allaah! Compensate the one who spends for You.” And the other one says, ‘O Allaah! Destroy everyone who withholds.” [1]

From ’Adee Ibn Haatim (radiyallaahu ’anhu) who said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) saying, ‘Save yourself from the Fire, even by giving half a date.” [2]

From ’Abdullaah Ibn Mas’ood (radiyallaahu ’anhu) who said, ‘The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘There is no jealousy, except in two cases: [i]: a man whom Allaah has given wealth, so he spends it righteously, [ii]: and a man whom Allaah has given al-Hikmah (i.e. the Qur‘aan), so he acts in accordance to it and teaches it to others.” [3]

From ’Abdullaah Ibn Mas’ood (radiyallaahu ’anhu) who said, ‘The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Which of you loves the wealth of his heirs are more than his own wealth?’ They said, “O Messenger of Allaah! There is no one amongst us, except that his own wealth is more beloved to him than the wealth of his heirs.” The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Know that there is no one amongst you, except that the wealth of his heirs is more beloved to him than his own. Your wealth is what you have spent for Allaah and the wealth of your heir is whatever you leave behind.” [4]

From Ka’b Ibn ’Ujrah (radiyallaahu ’anhu) who said, ‘The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Charity extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire.” [5]

From Abee Hurayrah (radiyallaahu ’anhu) who said, ‘The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘There are seven whom Allaah will shade with His shade on a Day in which there is no shade except His shade…” And he mentioned amongst them, “A man who spends in charity, but he hides it so much so that his left hand does not know what his right hand has spent.” [6]

From Anas Ibn Maalik (radiyallaahu ’anhu) who said, “The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) was never asked for anything for the sake of Islaam, except that he gave it.” He said, ‘So a man came, so he gave him the sheep that were between two mountains. So the man went back to his people and said, ‘O people! Embrace Islaam, because Muhammad gives so much in charity and he does not fear poverty.” [7]

From Abee Hurayrah (radiyallaahu ’anhu), from the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) who said, “Charity does not decrease wealth.” [8]

From ’Aa‘ishah (radiyallaahu ’anhaa) that they sacrificed a sheep. So the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “Is any of it left?” She replied, “None of it is left except for the shoulder.” He said, “Rather, all of it is left, except for the shoulder.” [9]

Imaam Muhammad ’Abdur-Rahmaan al-Mubaarakfooree (d.1353H) said in Tuhfatul-Ahwadhee (1/143), “That is: Whatever you have given in charity remains and whatever is still with you does not remain. This was an allusion to the statement of Allaah the Exalted,

Whatever is with you, will be exhausted, and whatever is with Allaah of good deeds will remain.” [Sooratun-Nahl 16:96].”

From Asmaa‘ (radiyallaahu ’anhaa) who said, ‘The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said to me, ‘Do not withhold your money, or else Allaah will also withhold His blessings from you.” [10]

From ’Umar Ibnul-Khattaab (radiyallaahu ’anhu) who said, “The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) commanded us to give in charity and that occurred at a time when I had some wealth, so I said, “If I am ever to beat Aboo Bakr, I will beat him today.” He said: So I came with half of my wealth. He said: So the Messenger of Allaah said to me, “What did you leave for your family?” I said, “I left the like of this.” And Aboo Bakr came with everything he had. So the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said to him, “What did you leave for your family?” He replied, “I have left for them Allaah and His Messenger.” ’Umar said: I said: Surely, I will not be able to compete with you in anything after this.” [11]

From ’Umar Ibnul-Khattaab (radiyallaahu ’anhu) said, ‘The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Whosoever builds a masjid in which the name of Allaah is mentioned, Allaah will build for him a house in Paradise.” [12]

From Abee Hurayrah (radiyallaahu ’anhu) who said, ‘The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Indeed, from the rewards of good deeds that will reach a Believer after his death are: [i]: knowledge that he taught and spread; [ii]: or a righteous child that he left behind; [iii]: or a copy of the Qur‘aan that he left as inheritance; [iv]: or a masjid that he built; [v]: or a house that he built for the wayfarers; [vi]: a canal that he dug; [vii]: or charity that he gave from his wealth whilst he was in good health.  These are deeds which will reach him after death.” [13]

From Abee Hurayrah (radiyallaahu ’anhu) who said, ‘The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Allaah said: Spend O son of Aadam. I will spend upon you.” [14]

From Sa’eed Ibn Yasaar who heard Abaa Hurayrah (radiyallaahu ’anhu) saying, ‘The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘No one gives as charity from good and lawful earnings – and Allaah does not accept anything but that which is good and lawful – except that ar-Rahmaan (the Most Merciful) accepts it with His Right Hand. And even if it is a date, it is nurtured in the Hand of ar-Rahmaan, just as one of you would nurture his colt until it becomes larger than a mountain.” [15]

From Abee Umaamah (radiyallaahu ’anhu) from the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) who said, “Charity given in secret extinguishes the Anger of the Lord.” [16]

’Alee al-Azdee said: I asked Ibn ’Abbaas (radiyallaahu ’anhu) about Jihaad.  So he replied, “Shall I not direct you to that which is better than Jihaad?”  I said, “Yes.”  He said, “Build a mosque and teach within it the Qur‘aan and fiqh (understanding) of the Religion.” [17]

Imaam Ibnul-‘Uthaymeen Encourages Spending One’s Wealth for Masaajid and Publication of Beneficial Books

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen (d.1421H) – rahimahullaah – said, “And from spending the wealth in the ways of goodness is: that the individual spends in the building of masaajid, either exclusively or by co-operating and participating along with others. So it has been authentically narrated from the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) that he said, “Whosoever builds a masjid for Allaah, seeking thereby the Face of Allaah, then Allaah will build a house for him in Paradise.” [1] So the Muslims pray in the…
